Maintain Mentor Status NMC Standards to Support Learning and Assessment In Practice (2008) ‘Initiate and respond to practice development to ensure safe and effective care is achieved and an effective learning environment is maintained’ Attend an annual Mentor Update Mentor a minimum of 2 students every 3 years Complete a review every 3 years with your manager, to appraise your performance as a mentor – triennial review Can only do this by keeping updated in issue which effect nurse education Keep your triennial review documents safe as you may be asked for them in an audit The NMC requirements for Mentors The NMC requirements for mentors remain unchanged and in the Standards to Support Learning and Assessment in Practice (SLAiP) (2008) sate that: ‘Mentors must demonstrate their knowledge, skills and competencies on an ongoing basis.’ By having: Completed a mentor preparation programme (or equivalent) Be annotated as a mentor on the local mentor register Completing a triennial review to ensure that only those who continue to meet the requirements remain on the register Mentored at least two students within the three year period. Nurses who make judgements about whether a student has achieved the required standards of proficiency for safe and effective practice must be on the same part or sub-part of the register as that which the student is intending to enter. Participated in annual updating – to include an opportunity to meet and explore assessment and supervision issues with other mentors/practice teachers. Explored as a group activity the validity and reliability of judgements made when assessing practice in challenging circumstances. The Mentor Register A local mentor register is kept by the Mentor Register Administrator in each Trust or organisation which contains: Names and qualifications of mentors Date of each mentors last update Date of each mentors triennial review Most mentors will receive notification of when they are due an update. Most Trusts and PIVOs keep their mentor register on the Health Care Placements (PPQA) website. The Healthcare placements website will generate an automated email to mentors who are out of date with their mentor update or their triennial review. Some of the PIVO placements keep their own independent register

NMC Revalidation From April 2016 the NMC will require evidence of: 450 practice hrs (900 hrs if dual registration as nurse and midwife) 35 hrs of CPD including 20 hrs participatory 5 practice-related feedback accounts 5 written reflective accounts Reflective discussions Health & character declaration Professional indemnity arrangements Confirmation Being an Up to Date Mentor could help with Re-Validation For requirement 2 the NMC says: You must have undertaken 35 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) relevant to your scope of practice as a nurse or midwife, in the three year period since your registration was last renewed or you joined the register. Of these 35 hours, at least 20 must have included participatory learning. Being an up to date mentor means: Participatory learning includes any learning activity which involves interacting with other people. As a registered mentor you are expected to attend a face to face mentor update every year. Most of these updates take around 2 hours a significant proportion of this is engaged in discussion on practice related student issues. So over a three year period this can be classed as 6 hours toward requirement 2. For requirement 3 the NMC says: You must have obtained five pieces of practice-related feedback in the three year period since your registration was last renewed or you joined the register. Feedback can come from a variety of sources, including patients, service users, students and colleagues. Feedback can also be obtained through reviewing complaints, team performance reports and serious event reviews. You can use the student evaluations of their experience in your practice placement and the feedback received during your triennial review. To meet the expectations of your triennial review you need to have supported 2 students in the three years. This can include acting as a supervising mentor to a colleague undertaking the Mentor Preparation Programme and acting as a supervisor of midwives For requirement 4 the NMC says: You must have prepared five written reflective accounts in the three year period since your registration was last renewed or you joined the register. These reflective accounts should refer to an instance of your CPD, and/or a piece of practice-related feedback you have received, and/or an event or experience in your own professional practice, and how this relates to the Code. You will have engaged in real world scenarios during your mentor updates which are directly and explicitly linked to the NMC Code (2015). Using the discussions you have had during these updates as the basis for reflections could provide you with some material to meet the requirement. You may also consider writing up your thoughts on any tripartite, grading or link lecturer meeting s you may have experienced. For requirement 5 the NMC says: You must have had a reflective discussion with another NMC registered nurse or midwife, covering your five written reflective accounts. You can reflect on your accounts during your triennial review or within the face to face discussion groups in the mentor updates. In addition you may have a A note of caution Whilst being a mentor is very helpful in contributing toward meeting the requirements of revalidation it is worth noting that the NMC are looking for a variety of sources for your evidence.

How important is feedback from your students? Mentors must discuss and encourage the student to evaluate the practice experience at final interview Students feedback about their learning experience in practice on the Healthcare Placements website. A hyperlink is built into each Practice Experience workbook in the e- portfolio(PebblePad) to make the evaluation easy to find

Student Evaluation Students get an email reminder on the VLE The LEM in each placement can view the evaluation in real time A process is in place for the Link Lecturer to feed back evaluations Mentors can use the evaluations in their triennial reviews and their re-validation

This will appear on the yellow banner on the top of the page and by clicking on the activate page option the page will refresh and open the assessor fields Spoke experiences are now viewed by clicking on the spoke experience tab in the Practice Experience Workbook. This keeps all the spoke experience documentation together in one area and will make it easier to find Supplementary work area contains any additional reflections, activities or experiences that the student has documented. The eportfolio website has had a major update and now has more information for mentors and for students. If a mentor has forgotten their log in details – the username is always their full work email address. Enter the email address in the username on the log in page, click on ‘forgotten your password’ and follow the on screen instructions Medicines calculations – see next slide

Assessing Medicines Management Calculations Students must demonstrate in every practice experience that they can calculate medicine dosages without error in practice through: Administration of medications using calculations under supervision Assisting or discussing with service users or carers their medicine administration calculations Scenario or simulation of medicines administration calculations If the practice experience placement does not directly administer medications and the mentors feel that they are unable to assess the student simulation or scenario can be used. The student might gain experience through spokes.

Calculating medicines Students must be given an opportunity to practice medicines calculations with support from their mentor. There has been a change to the medicines management calculations in PebblePad. Students have a chance to practice the meds calculations with formative feedback from the mentor. The mentor sets 10 medicines calculations, the student gives their answers, the mentor marks them as correct or incorrect and if incorrect gives feedback. This will help demonstrate learning and progression.

NMC Standards to Support Learning and Assessment In Practice (2008) NMC requirements are that mentors are competent in the following 8 domains Establishing effective working relationships Facilitation of learning Assessment and accountability Evaluation of learning Creating an environment for learning Context of practice Evidence based practice Leadership Scenarios are based on the 8 domains that the NMC have identified as attributes needed for mentoring students. While discussing and considering the scenarios try to link them to one of the domains (more detailed descriptions of the domains are on the back pages of the scenario hand-outs)
