2 Shared Tenancies in Fife Have developed two types –Shared temporary accommodation –Shared Private Sector Tenancies

3 Reasons for shared accommodation Welfare reform Under 35’s – single room rate Private renting key to Prevention Activities 29% of Prevention First customers accommodated through Key Fund

4 Tenancy Share Private Rented Sector initiative Delivered by Trust In Fife Trust In Fife currently deliver Key Fund Liaise with Private Landlords across Fife Access through Prevention First process

5 Tenancy Share – Key Elements Valley Accommodation Unit to provide temporary accommodation Workshop programme to increase tenancy skills Drop In Facility to get advice Housing Support for up to 6 months once in tenancy Working with Landlords to sell sharing

6 Workshop Programme 6 week programme to get “tenancy fit” Content covers- –What is involved in a tenancy & being a tenant –Finances & shared expenses –Resolving conflict –Healthy eating on a budget

7 Drop In Sessions Opportunity to meet other potential sharers Advice & Guidance

8 Valley Accommodation Unit 10 bed unit Prevention First Assessment Found to be roofless Need to be interested in tenancy share Can be accommodated until shared flat found

9 Moving On Matching done to sharer Been through work shop programme Key Fund will identify property Support once in property

10 Shared Temporary Accommodation 59 units developed Have been running for a year 3 Voluntary Sector partners providing Housing Support: –Scottish Christian Alliance –Frontline Fife –Glenrothes YMCA

11 Shared Temporary Accommodation Issues currently –Works well where there is the ability to match tenants –Very intensive use of Housing Support –High voids –Reducing the amount of Shared Temporary Accommodation (General reduction in demand for temporary accommodation all over). –High set up costs

12 Conclusion Shared Tenancies- –Work better where sharers know one another –Work better where there are elements of matching –Work better where there is work in advance on how to share –Very time intensive –Initial set up costs can be high –Need Housing Support to assist sharers –Time to grow landlord contacts
