Influence of IOL optic material on posterior capsule opacification and visual function Ken Hayashi, MD Hideyuki Hayashi, MD Hayashi Eye Hospital, Fukuoka, Japan The authors have no proprietary interest in any material described in this poster and received no financial support.

Purpose Our previous study showed that IOLs with a sharp optic edge were associated with less posterior capsule opacification (PCO) than were IOLs with a rounded edge, and also led to better visual function. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of optic material on PCO by comparing PCO and visual functions between eyes with an acrylic IOL and those with a silicone IOL of the same optic design and with the same optics.

Patients 100 patients who were scheduled for bilateral phacoemulsification surgery were enrolled Acrylic IOL (AMO Sensar; AR40e) in one eye and silicone IOL (Clariflex) of the same optic design and loops in the fellow eye 89 patients (89%) remained for analysis

Methods (A) PCO value---Scheimpflug photography system (NIDEK EAS-1000) (B) Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy rate (C) Best corrected visual acuity (D) Photopic and mesopic contrast visual acuity ---Menicon CAT-2000 At 1, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, and 36 months postop.

Conclusion 1) When acrylic and silicone IOLs are of the same design and with the same haptics, optic material does not influence strongly the development of PCO. 2) Visual function is comparable between eyes with a sharp-edged acrylic IOL and those with a sharp-edged silicone IOL.
