“the people”

 Lived in Alaska  Used the Bering Strait to come to Alaska  Lived in a very cold climate.

 They hunted whales, walruses, caribou, seals, and sometimes polar bears  They also ate seaweed

 Hunters  Fishermen  Ice Fishing - making holes in the ice and waiting for the air- breathing seals and walruses to use them when they needed air.  They learned to hunt this way by watching the polar bear

 Parkas – large, thick coats lined with animal fur.  Thick, long pants  Boots lined with animal fur  Made clothes and footwear from animal skins  Hoods on women’s parkas made extra large, to protect the baby from the harsh wind when snuggled against the mother's back.  Sewn together with needle and thread made from animal bone and skin.

 lived in igloos – made from snow and ice.  lived in tents made of animal skins and bones when temperatures were above freezing

 qajait – (aka Kayak)  Single Passenger boats that were covered in seal skin and floated very well.  Used to hunt Sea Animals.  If turned over could be righted by person in boat.

 On land, used dog sleds pulled by huskies

 Inuit industry depended on animal hides and bones  some tools were also made out of worked stones.

 Walrus ivory was an important material  used it to make knives.

 The women took care of the children, cleaned huts, sewed and cooked.
