How Bikes Changed Britain “Mr Sutton’s boy, Joe, got this new bicycle and all of a sudden he can go further and faster than me and they’re taking all our business away. He reckons he can do 12 deliveries an hour, and I can only do 5, unless they’re close together. But now, Mr Jackson’s been able to save up and get a bicycle for me too! Imagine me going faster than the horses! ” Thomas Brown, age 9 “…I soon became more accomplished, and was even able to ride down the road to the pier on my own! What a feeling! To be able to go out, unaccompanied and in control of my own course for the first time in my life!” Lady Julia Forsythe-Cunningham, age 35
