Why do we have affirmative action? Affirmative action involves steps being taken to increase the representation of women and minorities in areas of employment, education, and business from which they have been historically excluded. When those steps involve preferential selection—selection on the basis of race, gender, or ethnicity—affirmative action generates intense controversy.

Questions Addressing Affirmative Action (Yes or No) Does affirmative action justly compensate past wrongs? Is Affirmative Action necessary to achieve equal opportunity? Is it OK that Affirmative Action contradicts notions of meritocracy? Is diversity in all areas of society a valuable social good?
