Anchored Talk Turn to page What are the man and girl doing with the pans? How did the people get around? The open country could only be traveled by horse. Possessions were packed in covered wagons. What did the towns of the Old West look like?

Listen: “By the Great Horn Spoon!” is about two men who went out west looking for gold. As I read, listen for the following words: Claim Exuberance Miners Sluice box

Claim- a piece of land allotted to or taken by someone The miners made of claim of the mountain in hopes of finding gold. Exuberance- very happy The teacher danced to show her exuberance over the test scores.

Miners-someone who works in a mine After several years of digging, the miners struck gold. Sluice box- a long trough from which water, gravel, and sand run The miners found several ounces of gold in the sluice box.

Generalize- means to make a broad statement that applies to several examples. How do we decide which examples to make a generalization about? Authors sometimes make generalizations by using clue words. Why would an author want to make generalization?

As we read “The Gold Rush,” let’s look for generalizations. Please read the paragraph one. What generalization did Abraham Lincoln make about the West? What examples support his generalization? Would you consider his generalization valid? Why or why not?

When I read “The Gold Rush” I ask myself evaluative questions to help me understand the passage better. Was it smart for eighty thousand people to move to the area where Sutter and Marshall were? When I look back at the paragraph, I see that people who found gold and silver got rich, so I can judge this to be a smart decision.
