Summary

ESG-CET Purpose and Objectives Purpose  Provide climate researchers worldwide with access to data, information, models, analysis tools, and computational resources required to make sense of enormous climate simulation datasets Objectives  Meet specific distributed database, data access, and data movement needs of national and international climate projects  Provide a universal and secure web-based data access portal for broad multi-model data collections  Provide a wide-range of Grid-enabled climate data analysis tools and diagnostic methods to international climate centers and U.S. government agencies  Develop Grid technology that enhances data accessibility and usability  Make newly developed tools and technologies available for use in other domains

ESG-CET Organization

Accomplishments: World-Wide Impact on Climate Science  Three portals serving 235+ TB of data CMIP3 (IPCC AR4), CCSM, PCM, POP, CSIM, CLM, NARCCAP, C-LAMP  16,000 users from more than 500 locations world-wide  0.7+ PB of data delivered, avg. 500 GB/day  500+ scientific papers from CMIP3 archive data  2007 Nobel Peace Prize for IPCC AR4 Over 500 sites worldwide Average downloads: 400 to 600 GB/day

Scaling ESG for the Next Generation of Climate Data…  Distributed architecture consisting of gateways, data nodes  Federation of authentication, metadata with independence for individual sites  Global search & discovery capability  Server-side analysis and visualization capabilities

…On an Aggressive Schedule  Next-generation ESG goes into production in July  International testbed for CMIP5 deployment begins in July  General deployment of data nodes to CMIP5 contributors begins in late 2009  CMIP5 simulation runs begin early 2010  Continual development and extension of ESG system capabilities
