Throughout history, various seafaring people have tried to control the region Because of its important shipping lanes.

Hinduism and Buddhism influence the history of the area. Huge monuments, like the Borobudur in Java, were built.

In the 1300’s Arabs began trading with the region, and they introduced Islam. Islam is the main religion of island Southeast Asia today.

Europeans called this region The Spice Islands. They were searching for cloves, nutmeg, and pepper.

The Spanish conquered the Philippines in 1521, Which were named after King Philip II. They converted the people to Roman Catholicism.

After the Spanish American War, The US took over the Philippines.

The Dutch went to the Spice Islands for trade, And colonized the islands that make up Indonesia today. They called it the Dutch East Indies.

The British set up colonies on the Malay peninsula, and founded the port city of Singapore.

After WWII many countries in the region gained independence.
