PARENT WORKSHOP How can I help my child with skills? January 31, 2014 Ms. Bergan

WHAT DOES SKILLS LOOK LIKE IN THE CLASSROOM?  Warm up – Blending words (10 – 15 words)  Chaining folder- manipulating/reading decodable words  By unit 8 the focus moves away from chaining folders.  New skill taught – whole class  New skill practiced – small group/individual work  Worksheet work, reading with a partner, games, etc.

WHAT SKILLS SHOULD MY CHILD BE ABLE TO DO AT THIS POINT IN THE YEAR?  What we have already learned…  Read 3 letter decodable words  Segment words by sounds (bat  b…a…t)  Know all letter sounds (except /q/)  Write all letters in lowercase

DECODABLE WORDS 100% made up of letters that can be sounded out by your child. Your child CAN read the word, just give them time to sound it out.

WHERE WE ARE NOW  Practicing naming letters (by letter name and by sound)  Reading decodable words in a sentence form.  Reading 3 and 4 letter decodable words.  Writing two to three word sentences with no ‘tricky’ words.  Cat in hat.  Guided writing – copying decodable words and illustrating the sentence.  Comprehension- Able to understand what they read in a story.

WHERE WE ARE HEADING..  Blends and digraphs  Blends – 2 letters each make a sound (ex. Slip)  Digraphs- letter team, two letters work together to make 1 sound  ch  sh  th  qu  ng  Double letter spelling - may cause problems when writing, exposure to text will help.  bb ggllpptt  ddccmmrrzz  ffcknnss

 Tricky words  Only part of the word is decodable. The part of the word that is decodable will be underlined as students learn these words.  “the”  /th/ /u/  Long Vowels  a, e, i, o, u (silent e vs. magic e) WHERE WE ARE HEADING..

HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD PRACTICE THESE SKILLS?  Blending sounds together  Chaining folder –  Stretchy the snake  Guess my word (slowly stretch out a word)  Roll a word  Reading words  Decodable word bingo  Decodable word memory match  Decodable word game board  Writing words:  Dictation tests - call out words and phrases to your child while they write the words, have them write them in shaving cream, colored pencils, dry erase markers, etc.  Pick a phrase- write phrases on cards and have your child pull it out of a hat
