 Reread the 3 rd paragraph of the article. What is the main idea & supporting details? They’re not just afraid – they’re in a panic. Sometimes they get halfway across the bridge and just freeze. They stop their cars, put their heads down, and cry. They don’t move until help comes.

 Who is afraid to cross the Mackinac Bridge? How does the fear affect them? People who are afraid of heights can’t cross the bridge. They can be young or old, and drive a car, truck, or motorcycle. They panic & have to stop until help comes.

 What are the results of a phobia? The fear is so strong that people can’t function, or do the things they want to do.

 What caused this woman’s fear of running water? As a child, she was trapped in a river by the current. She had to stand under a waterfall before being rescued.  How can childhood events lead to phobias? What starts as a shock from a single event can become a general fear of many things or ideas.

 How can people with phobias learn to live with them? They can get help in overcoming them; they can carry on with their lives even though they’re afraid; they can avoid whatever they are afraid of.

 Main ideas of the article: Many people have strong fears, called phobia, that greatly affect their lives.  List at least five supporting details! The fear doesn’t let them do certain things; They become panic; Childhood memories caused phobia

 Would reading this article help someone with a phobia? The article would help. It explains what phobias are, how they start, and what can be done about them.

 People suffer from many kinds of phobias. Some fear heights. Others dread entering wide-open places. Still others are afraid of being closed into small spaces. May are afraid to fly in airplanes. Dirt and germs are some people’s biggest fear…Others are afraid of animals, like cats or snakes.
