Rhetorical Devices By Emmanuel Soto

Aphorism “An aphorism is a concise statement that is made in a matter of fact tone to state a principle or an opinion that is generally understood to be a universal truth. Aphorisms are often adages, wise sayings and maxims aimed at imparting sense and wisdom.” Aphorisms are phrases that have a meaning or a purpose behind them. They tend to be little sayings that have a bit of wisdom. However they can become demeaning if one is made to be rude.

Text Examples of Aphorism “either shape up or ship out”. The nicest thing about the future is that it always starts tomorrow.

Visual

Antimetabole Antimetabole is a rhetoric method in which the last part of the phrase is put against the first as to make a point. Though instead of being in correct order they are in reverse order so they can create a point the reader recognizes “Reversing grammatical order creates a structure known as a chiasmus (Greek for 'arranged crosswise') in which one sentence is the grammatical mirror image of the other.”

Text Examples of Antimetabole "Women forget all those things they don't want to remember, and remember everything they don't want to forget.“ "Stops static before static stops you."

Visual of Antimetabole

Juxtaposition Juxtaposition is the method of placing two different words next to one another so they create a sense of contrast. Authors usually use this literary device to help make comparison and contrast. They can use this to help the readers make the correct assumption of people (i.e. if they are the hero or the villain)

Text Examples of Juxtaposition “O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night Like a rich jewel in an Ethiope’s ear;” The room was filled with a deafening silence.

The activity Everyone needs to split up into three group of nine. You will be handed a note cards and markers that you will use to write your answers. I will give you a phrase that is one of the three rhetorical devices. The first group to hold up the note card that has the correct rhetorical device gets a point.

Money will buy a fine dog but only kindness will make him wag his tail.

Answer Aphorism

“Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”

Answer Juxtaposition

“Eat to live, not live to eat.”

Answer Antimetable

From my mother's sleep I fell into the State, And I hunched in its belly till my wet fur froze. Six miles from earth, loosed from its dream of life, I woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters. When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose.

Answer Juxtaposition

Life isn't tied with a bow but it's still a gift.

Answer Aphorism

“I go where I please, and I please where I go.”

Answer Antimetable

Youth is a blunder; Manhood a struggle; Old age regret.
