MENA Materialkarakterisering 26th January 2010 Ole Bjørn Karlsen o.b.karlsen(at)fys.uio.no

Material is a generic term used to describe physical matter in the solid state which occurs naturally or is manufactured to achieve particular physical properties and characteristics. Material characterization char·ac·ter·ize 1 : to describe the character or quality of 2 : to be a characteristic of : DISTINGUISH What? Properties Chemistry Structure... How? Flewitt and Wilde Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary Why?

CompositionCaCO 3 Calcite (Kalsitt, kalkspat)

Calcite structure Aragonite CaCO 3 CalciteAragonite Orthorombic Pmcn a = 4,95 Å, b = 7,96 Å, c = 5,73 Å Aragonite structure Hexagonal-R 32/m a = 4,99 Å, c = 17,06 Å (a = 6,37 Å,  = 46°05’)

Skutterudite CoAs 3 Structure type CeFe 4 Sb 12 Filled skutteruditesLa 0,2 Co 4 P 12 Skuterud gård, Modum CoP 3 NiP 3 IrAs 3 RhAs 3 IrSb 3 RhSb 3 CoSb 3 (Fe,Co)P 3 IrP 3

WHY? But also:Applications Example: Skutterudites have interesting thermoelectric properties

Microstructure Steel (cf. Mesostructure: Brandon and Kaplan p )

Rapid quenching – martensite
