Cite your stuff A simple guide to knowing what PLAGIARISM is and what you can do to avoid it.

Should I really pay attention to this presentation? Cite your stuff

You will find out… What is PLAGIARISM? Why is it a big deal? How to do your work without plagiarizing Cite your stuff What you learn will be very important when it comes to writing your next assignment.

How long will this presentation take? About 10 minutes Cite your stuff

First of all, exactly what is PLAGIARISM? Plagiarism occurs when you use another person’s words, ideas or work without giving proper credit to the original owner. Whether the information is taken from a book, the Internet, or an , whether or not it is a fact, a graph, or a picture, you must give proper credit to the original author or source. Plagiarism is stealing.

Cite your stuff Did you know that it is also academically dishonest when… You submit the same paper or assignment to more than one class. You ask a friend to write the paper for you and then hand it in as your own work. You download or buy a paper from the Internet and hand it in as your own work.

Cite your stuff Whether or not it is intentional or unintentional, PLAGIARISM is a serious academic offence. Students caught plagiarizing may… Have to redo the assignment, but may automatically lose a percentage of the original grade. Receive a mark of zero, especially if the student intentionally plagiarized the assignment.

Cite your stuff Five easy steps to writing your research paper and avoiding plagiarism. 1. Start early 2. Think about the topic 3. Know where to look 4. Take careful notes 5. Ask for help if you need it

Cite your stuff 1.Start early Don’t leave researching your paper to the last minute. You may be tempted to unacceptable shortcuts. Starting your research early allows you to keep track of the resources you used in your paper.

Cite your stuff 2. Think about the topic Don’t keep yourself in the dark. Think about what you already know about the topic before starting to research. You will then have a better idea of what you know, and what information you used from other sources.

Cite your stuff 3. Know where to look It seems easy to go straight to Google or another search engine to find information; however, relying totally on information from the web is a bad idea. The library and its website provide access to online databases and other scholarly sources of research.

Cite your stuff Cutting and pasting is an easy way to gather information; however this could easily result in plagiarism. Make sure to read the resources you are using for your research. Make careful and concise notes based upon what you read. 4. Take careful notes

Cite your stuff 5. Ask for help if you need it Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. A teacher or librarian can clarify the questions you may have on plagiarism.

Cite your stuff When you learn to correctly cite your sources of information, and how to carefully conduct research; then, you are on your way to SUCCESS.
