O LORD, You are our God; do not let man prevail against You!" 1 Samuel 14:6 Then Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, "Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; it may be that the LORD will work for us. For nothing restrains the LORD from saving by many or by few." Judges 7:7 Then the LORD said to Gideon, "By the three hundred men who lapped I will save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, every man to his place." REVIEW

Lesson 5 1 Kings 16 2 Chronicles 16-17

Opening  2 Chronicles 16:1-6  Asa king in Judah 36 th year  Baasha king in Israel  Israel and Judah at war  Asa made treaty with Ben-Hadad king of Syria; sent silver and gold  Ben-Hadad attacked Israel

Rebuke of Hanani  2 Chronicles 16:7-10  Asa had put trust in king of Syria; not in Jehovah  Reminded Asa of past victories  “strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him”  Asa was angry; put Hanani in prison

Jehu Rebukes Baasha  Different reason than Asa  1 Kings 16:2-4 "Inasmuch as I lifted you out of the dust and made you ruler over My people Israel, and you have walked in the way of Jeroboam, and have made My people Israel sin, to provoke Me to anger with their sins, "surely I will take away the posterity of Baasha and the posterity of his house, and I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat. "The dogs shall eat whoever belongs to Baasha and dies in the city, and the birds of the air shall eat whoever dies in the fields."

Baasha Dies  Elah his son reigned in his place  1 Kings 16:7 And also the word of the LORD came by the prophet Jehu the son of Hanani against Baasha and his house, because of all the evil that he did in the sight of the LORD in provoking Him to anger with the work of his hands, in being like the house of Jeroboam, and because he killed them.

Reign of Elah  26 th year of Asa king of Judah  Elah reigned two years  Zimri, commander of chariots, killed Elah while he was drunk  Elah was killed in the 27 th year of Asa  Zimri destroyed the house of Baasha As prophesied Even killed Baasha’s friends!!

Reign of Zimri  1 Kings 16:13 for all the sins of Baasha and the sins of Elah his son, by which they had sinned and by which they had made Israel sin, in provoking the LORD God of Israel to anger with their idols.  27 th year of Asa king of Judah  Zimri reigned seven days

Reign of Zimri  1 Kings 16:19 because of the sins which he had committed in doing evil in the sight of the LORD, in walking in the way of Jeroboam, and in his sin which he had committed to make Israel sin.  People of Israel made Omri king over Israel Was commander of the army

Reign of Omri  31 st year of Asa king of Judah  Omri reigned 12 years  Build the city of Samaria

Reign of Omri  31 st year of Asa king of Judah  Omri reigned 12 years  Build the city of Samaria  1 Kings 16:25 Omri did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and did worse than all who were before him.

Reign of Omri  1 Kings 16:26 For he walked in all the ways of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and in his sin by which he had made Israel sin, provoking the LORD God of Israel to anger with their idols.  Pattern??  Ahab his son is king

Intro to Ahab  Son of Omri  38 th year of Asa  Reigned 22 years in Samaria  1 Kings 16:30 Now Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the LORD, more than all who were before him.  Took Jezebel, daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians as wife; served Baal

Baal Worship  Baal and Asherah were gods of fertility  Fornication was part of the worship  Priests and priestesses were male and female prostitutes  Morals of Israel plummeted to the depths when they turned to Baal worship

Current Location: Michael C. Carlos Museum, Atlanta, Georgia. Actual Size: Approx. 3-4in Location Found: Israel, exact location not known. Time Period: B.C. Scripture Reference: Judges 3:7

Intro to Ahab  1 Kings 16:33 And Ahab made a wooden image. Ahab did more to provoke the LORD God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel who were before him.

Rebuilding Jericho  1 Kings 16:34 In his days (Ahab’s) Hiel of Bethel built Jericho. He laid its foundation with Abiram his firstborn, and with his youngest son Segub he set up its gates, according to the word of the LORD, which He had spoken through Joshua the son of Nun.  Joshua 6:26 Then Joshua charged them at that time, saying, "Cursed be the man before the LORD who rises up and builds this city Jericho; he shall lay its foundation with his firstborn, and with his youngest he shall set up its gates."

Death of Asa  2 Chronicles 16:11-14  39 th year of reign—diseased in his feet did not seek the L ORD for help  Very severe; did not seek the L ORD for help  Died in 41 st year of his reign  Buried in City of David

Jehoshaphat  Reigned in place of his father Asa  Strengthened Judah against Israel walked in His commandments  2 Chronicles 17:3 Now the LORD was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the former ways of his father David; he did not seek the Baals, but sought the God of his father, and walked in His commandments and not according to the acts of Israel.

Jehoshaphat  Removed the high places and wooden images from Judah  Sent leaders and priest throughout the land to teach the people  Took Book of the Law of the L ORD with them

Jehoshaphat  Surrounding kingdoms were afraid  Philistines brought presents  Built fortresses and storage cities in Judah  Had men of valor and men of war Over a million men prepared for war

Jehoshaphat  Adnah the captain 300,000 mighty men of valor  Jehohanan the captain 280,000 men  Amasiah 200,000 mighty men of valor  Eliada a mighty man of valor 200,000 armed with bow and shield  Jehozabad 180,000 prepared for war

Kings  Judah  Rehoboam 17 yrs; evil  Abijam 3 yrs; evil  Asa 41 yrs; good  Jehoshaphat 25 yrs; good  Israel (all evil)  Jeroboam - 22 yrs  Nadab - 2 yrs  Baasha - 24 yrs  Elah - 2 yrs  Zimri - 1 week  Omri - 12 yrs  Ahab - 22 yrs

Lessons  1 Kings 16:30 Now Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the LORD, more than all who were before him.  Sin is progressive  Sin is a downward spiral  Think about the U.S. today???  James 1:15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. 2012?? 2009??

Lessons  James 1:15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.  Think about David Lust, adultery, murder  Think about prodigal son Had to hit bottom before he came home Think about US….
