KUTNO TU MIESZKAMY WE LIVE HERE

Kutno is an average town situated in the centre of Poland. It has a good connection with such big cities as Warsaw, Poznań or Cracow thanks to the motorways A1 and A2. These are the communication routes with an international meaning Moscow – Berlin and Gdańsk – Vienna. The town isopen to the cooperation with foreign countries. The European Centre of the Small Baseball League for 55 countries is located here. Besides there are plenty of tourist attractions, for example the Aqua park with bowling, squash and fitness. The population of Kutno is about forty-five thousand people. The community is not ethnically diverse. The greatest problems are human migration to big cities and the unemployment.

In this environment Grabski School Complex No. 3 is one of the most important and longest functioning centers educating the youth according to the needs of the job market. Economists, traders, logistics specialists, advertising technicians or computer technicians are educated here. Students who live in Kutno and beyond the town have a convenient way to school because it is situated in the town centre on Kosciuszki Street. Young people aged attend the school. Their education lasts 4 years and is finished with Matura exam and job skills exam. After finishing the school some students start their first job, but most of them decide to continue their education at universities or technical universities around the country. The school employs 60 teachers and 520 students attend here. Most of them are the inhabitants of Kutno, but many commute from nearby towns and villages. The youth comes from diverse families, mostly middle income and poor.

They are often families where parents migrate to look for work. That is why some students are the victims of the euro-orphanhood. Thus we would like to support and prepare young people to the life in a fast changing community and world. Our aim is to equip our students with tools necessary to move around this complicated and culturally diverse space – we teach foreign languages or how to use information technology. But learning process is mainly gathering experiences and using certain skills in practice. In Kutno these opportunities are rather limited. Apart from the fact that the town is located in the centre of Poland, or even Europe, the cooperation with various institutions or other schools is often occasional and takes place only locally.

We would like to start an international cooperation with schools in order to prepare a young person to the life in modern, multi-cultural Europe. Such contacts with other schools will undoubtedly help to overcome some existing stereotypes and prejudices, which is quite a challenge in the context of the discussion about the cultural diversity of Europe. What is more the cooperation will give us the possibility to shape the skills of group work, exchanging experiences and the rise of the involvement in performed activities. One of the most important goals of the cooperation with a partner school is, in our point of view, learning critical thinking and forming young people’s own opinions. Confronting the outlooks with other people’s opinions gives the possibility to shape the attitudes of tolerance and openness towards mental, cultural and religious diversity. We hope international cooperation will open up such opportunities to us.
