Carousel Discussion Lord of the Flies

30 minutes Carousel Discussion: With a partner, travel to each of the ten posters. Listen for the music before you move to the next poster (2-3 minutes each poster). Discuss the statement on the poster. Leave a sticky note, with your group number, explaining why you agree or disagree with the statement, include evidence to make it a strong statement. I absolutely agree with this statement because… for example… No! This statement is not true. We disagree because… like when… This could be true if... One way to look at this is when…

Carousel Discussion: You should now be at the first poster you commented on. 5 minutes

Carousel Discussion: Read the responses. Determine the TREND in the responses. Choose the 3 most interesting responses to share with the class. 10 minutes

Carousel Discussion: We are now going to share! Pay attention. When you see your assigned poster, be prepared to talk to the class. Share the trend and the 3 most interesting responses. 10 minutes

When given a chance, people often single out and degrade another to improve themselves.

Society is what holds everyone together and with out society, our ideals, values, and sense of right and wrong are lost.

The power of fear and control can overwhelm a person.

If humanity is to survive, innocence may have to be sacrificed.

When the institutions of law and order slip away or are ignored, human beings revert to a more primitive part of their nature.

Whenever groups of people coexist, there will be a struggle for power.

It’s better to examine the consequences of a decision before it is made, than to discover them afterwards.

Children are capable of horrific behavior.

Everyone is capable of murder.

Some people are meant to be leaders; some are meant to be followers.

Exit Ticket: What surprised you most about the carousel activity? SLAM a Poster! S – Restate a statement with your opinion (You could start your SLAM by saying, “What surprised me most from this activity is the statement…”) L – Choose evidence from LOTF. A – Explain why you chose this evidence; how does it relate? M – make a connection to your own life or the world today.
