 Flowers, grasses, spices, fruit, wood, roots, resins, balsams, leaves, gums, and animal secretions.  Other ingredients are alcohol, petrochemicals, coal, and coal tars are used in the manufacture of perfumes.  Some plants do not produce oils naturally. Therefore, synthetic chemicals must be used to re-create the smells of non-oily substances.  Synthetics also create original scents not found in nature.

 Some perfume ingredients are animal products.  For example, castor comes from beavers, musk from male deer, and ambergris from the sperm whale.  Animal substances are often used as fixatives that enable perfume to evaporate slowly and emit odors longer.

While fragrant liquids used for the body are often considered perfume, true perfumes are defined as extracts or essences and contain a percentage of oil distilled in alcohol. Water is also used.

 Since the beginning of recorded history, humans have attempted to mask or enhance their own odor by using perfume.  Scent is one of the most powerful of senses. Smelling a certain fragrance can signal a season or a treasured memory or simply make a mundane task like cleaning a little more enjoyable.

 Everyday products have fragrance in them, such as…  Cosmetics, personal care products, cleaning products, air fresheners and of course fine fragrances.  On average the fragrance only makes up about 2% of the product.  However, that 2% is vitally important to the product's identity and functionality.

 In a survey it was found that eight major factors of mood are affected by fragrance.  They include a beneficial effect on:  irritation  stress  depression  apathy  They also include the enhancement of  happiness  sensuality  relaxation  Stimulation

 Fragrance influences health by making the act of cleaning more pleasant and rewarding.  Research shows that a pleasant fragrance is of top importance in the consumers’ mind when purchasing cleaning products.

 There is increasing evidence that odors may influence human responses to pain.  Such findings have been attributed variously either to odors directing attention away from the pain or to the fact that odors may influence moods, which in turn may modify the unpleasantness or intensity of pain.

 In a survey conducted by The New York Times, 38% of the male respondents and 31% of the female respondents said that they use fragrance to make themselves more romantically attractive to others.

 Over the past 30 to 40 years there has been a political and societal trend to eliminate as much risk from peoples lives as possible, especially from consumer products.  Allergies in general are on the increase but allergies towards fragrances are decreasing thanks to the work done by the industry to minimize the use of sensitizing materials.
