Data Classification Lesson 1.2

Types of Data Qualitative data consist of attributes, labels, or nonnumerical entries Quantitative data consist of numerical measurements of counts

Levels of Measurement Nominal Ordinal Interval Ratio

Nominal Level of Measurement Data is qualitative Categorized using names, labels or qualities This data cannot be used for mathematical equations.

Ordinal Level of Measurement Qualitative or quanitative This data can be arranged in an order Differences between data entries have no real meaning

Interval Level of Measurement Data can be ordered You can calculate meaningful differences between entries Zero is a position on a scale but in not an inherent zero

Ratio Level of Measurement Same as interval with a real zero Two data values can be formed so one value can be expressed as a multiple of another.

Inherent Zero An inherent zero is a zero that implies “none.” When unsure between ratio and interval, ask yourself what the meaning of a zero is.

Our Data Collection Gender Height in inches Money in wallet Hours you work Eye color Shoe size Ideal temperature Grade in math class

Data collection In doing data collection, if I asked how many extracurricular activities you were involved in. What level of measurement is this? If I had asked “What extracurricular activities are you involved in?”, what level of measurement is this?
