Dangers of Online Media and Social Networking By: Micah Cochrane Maurice Gamble Shenne Howell Elvyn Morales

Media???  What is online media?  - Online media is information collected from newspapers, radio, television and any other source of media streamed together on the web.

Social networking  Social networking allows people to show information about themselves by sharing pictures and videos and private messaging to communicate with friends.

Ups and Down’s

How the info is processed….  New findings show that the streams of information provided by social networking sites are too fast for the brain's "moral compass" to process and could harmfully effect humans emotional development.

Dangers  Sex predators camouflage themselves on social networks to initiate online communications with children that later become missing or exploited from their parents.

Dangers of Online Media  Pornography  Online Predators  Online Dating  Online Advertising  Pop-ups  Online Bullying

 Pornography is one of many dangers on the web especially for children who are surfing the web. This media comes through pop-ups or even free porn sites. This often gives viruses and also damages our society teaching minds to participate in sexual activities.  Online Predators are one of the biggest online dangers. Cruel people are surfing the web looking for vulnerable humans and trying to take advantage of them using tactful ways and techniques.

 Online Advertising is very dangerous, especially when it comes to your money you may think that your money is going to the right place but it could be a scam.  Online Dating is dangerous in numerous ways, in previous years it has lead to many kidnappings, and date rape cases.

 Pop-Ups (Ads)– This is a common tool used on the web by different company’s and carriers. The key idea with pop ups is to capture one’s address or to hack into their computer. Pop-up blockers should be used.  Online Bullying- Usually happens through one talking down on another through internet sites and social networks. Also happens in forms of nasty rumors and humiliation tactics.

Examples  Sending hateful messages or death threats to children  spreading lies about them online  making nasty comments on their social networking profiles  creating a website to bash their looks or reputation

Effects Effects  Can be worse than face-to-face bullying  Victim gets lack of self-confidence, to depression, anxiety, insomnia and a drop in social and academic skills.  Victims of communication to unknown predators are often stalked by that person, their identity is stolen, and they discover their computer getting hacked.

Popular Web  Facebook  Myspace  Twitter  Black planet

Safety Tips  Do not give out personal information:  Address  Address  Social Security Number  Phone number  Name of Your School

 post information that you are only comfortable with others seeing  knowing the website’s security that you are using

 Never send your photo or a picture of your family to anyone  Never give out your password(s)  avoid flirting with strangers online
