Principles of Design

Balance Artists create balance using visual equilibrium. Correlates with our physical sense of balance Create compositional balance using symmetry or assymetry

Proportion The size and scale of various elements in relation to one another Idealized or expressive In context rather than standardized

Rhythm Establishes organized movement Sometimes created through the repetition of elements, however variety is essential for appeal

Emphasis Creating one or more areas of emphasis by establishing a contrast Contrast may be in color, shade, size, texture, shape, or any other element

Unity A sense of harmony within the entire piece Creates a sense of completion Allows all elements of the piece to come together

Balance Symmetry Emphasis How does the artist use emphasis to offset the asymmetrical balance created by the emphasis on the crest of the waves ?

Balance Symmetry VS. Assymetry

Rhythm and Harmony Discuss the use of rhythm. How does the balance of the principles establish the movement of the eye as both rhythmatic and harmonious ?
