Not long ago, Some Middle Schools and High schools have combined to make a 6 year school. School System The Japanese school system consists of elementary school (grade 1-6), Middle school (grade 7-9),High School (grade10-12) and University which last for 4 years after. Elementary School NEWSFLASH Students start school when they are six years of age and it is compulsory. URL There is approximately 30 to 40 students in each class. Students study Japanese (our English), maths, science, social studies, music, craft, P.E and home economics, including cooking and sewing. Students must wear uniforms whilst at school. The students don’t pay anything to go to school. Every 3 years the text books become free. High School and University NEWSFLASH Although not compulsory in Japan, over 90% of all children attend Senior High School. High School and University For those students who have a part time job, they can still attend High School lessons which are in the evening. In order to get into a good University, Japanese students must get into a good High School. High School and University is not compulsory in Japan.
