Water - for each of the following points 1.explain why this property of water is important to living things and 2.give a specific example. Water is an excellent solvent - water makes up most of the blood plasma & cytoplasm - dissolves a wide range of other molecules eg --hormones, proteins, sugars, salts… Water heats up slowly. - so rivers and seas stay a more constant temp. - helps avoid denaturing of enzymes etc. - slows rate of heating up in cells. Water forms Ice when it freezes - ice is less dense than water, so floats on lakes in winter, insulates lakes, stops them freezing solid - allows aquatic life to survive Evaporates taking lots of heat energy with it. - allow homeothermic organisms to maintain a constant temp. - sweat takes lots of heat energy with it when it evaporates. Water is transparent High Surface Tension Acts as a pH buffer.

Draw the structure of a water molecule.... Annotate the parts of the molecule which are responsible for the properties described on the previous slide.
