The Next Generation Designed for Windows Logo Program: An Introduction Jon Morris Program Manager Windows Logo Program microsoft.com Microsoft Corporation Jeff Meissner Program Manager Windows Logo Program microsoft.com Microsoft Corporation

Session Goals Attendees should leave this session with the following: Awareness of the new opportunities provided by the enhancements to the logo program Understanding of the direction of the new logo requirements for Windows codenamed “Longhorn” Knowledge of when the formal requirements will be released and when to provide feedback

Session Outline Define the goals of the Windows Logo Program New name: Windows Logo Program Introduce the new "Gold" level Goals of the “Silver” level (formerly “logo” level) Goals of the new "Gold" level "Gold" level relation to “Silver” level Implementation of the "Gold" level program Administration & submissions Testing and validation of "Gold" requirements Examples of "Gold" level requirements Logo program milestone schedule

Introducing the "Gold" Logo Program A new qualification level for the Windows Logo Program The new level has a temporary placeholder name: "Gold" The former “logo” level has a new placeholder name: "Silver" The "Gold" program will recognize products that deliver the premium Longhorn experience New level created in response to partner feedback and Microsoft improvement efforts Need to differentiate products Relevance of requirements to an evolving industry Harmonize the different Microsoft logo programs

“Gold” Logo Relation Between "Silver" and "Gold" Logo "Silver" is the first logo qualification level Includes subcomponent levels “signature” and “Driver Quality Signature” (DQS) "Gold" builds upon "Silver" "Gold" level requirements are a superset of "Silver" requirements “Signature” DQS " "Silver" Logo

Goals of the “Silver” Logo Program The goals of the "Silver" Logo program are Promote reliability and stability e.g., no memory pool corruption Compatibility with OS and industry standards PnP and bus specification compliance Functional capability Ethernet adaptor operates as described in the DDK Hardware evolves along with OS architectural advances New driver models, DEP, 64-bit The program is meant to be inclusive

Goals of the “Silver” Logo Program (con’t) Sublevel components of the “Silver” Logo program “signature level” (no logo) Reliability & Stability OS and industry standards compatibility Minimal functional compatibility Driver Quality Signature (DQS) (no logo) Reliability & Stability True generic driver qualification See session “Windows Driver Quality Signature”

Goals of the "Gold" Logo Program Provide means to differentiate premium products New marketing incentives are included with the "Gold" logo See session “Windows Longhorn Logo Program: The Next Generation of ‘Designed for Windows’ ” Distinguish between the “works well” product and those that deliver the best-in-class, premium experience "Gold" logo products will meet a higher bar for performance and functionality Reduce the multiple similar looking logos to a very few Simplification requested by industry partners Messaging and look will be similar for SW applications and HW products

Goals of the "Gold" Logo Program (cont.) Expand scope to include PC Ecosystem "Silver" logo program focused on PC centric products "Gold" logo program extends the “Silver” logo program to include products that interact with the PC More relevant and responsive to industry development cycles

Implementation of the “Gold” Program

Implementation of "Gold" Logo Program "Silver" Logo program implemented the same as former “logo” level The "Gold" program recognizes partners who invest in development & marketing to deliver premium products Many products will not meet the higher bar of the premium requirements "Gold" logo will not be available for all product categories "Gold" program requirements will be updated frequently In order to be more responsive to industry development cycles, the requirements will be updated at least once per year The "Gold" Logo program only applies to Longhorn

Testing and Administration – Testing and Administration – Preliminary Administration is expected to be similar to Windows XP logo Online submission Processed by WHQL Testing will be an extension to the WDK The WDK is the test vehicle for "Silver" logo WDK will also be used to validate "Gold" requirements "Gold" level testing may include testing in addition to WDK Audit process Use of specialized industry specific test equipment Third party qualification Proposed means to identify "Gold" compliant products Digital signature with "Gold" attribute Distinct placement on Windows Market Place Distinct logo artwork

Proposed "Gold" level system requirements Consumer class systems: Support Aero visual theme Support DVD burning Business class systems: Support security by implementing TPM v1.2 Support RTC with array microphone capable audio system Mobile system: Implement g External display connector must be DVI Implement button for launching mobility settings Battery life requirement "Gold" System Requirements – "Gold" System Requirements – Preliminary

"Gold" Device Requirements – "Gold" Device Requirements – Preliminary Proposed "Gold" level device requirements Printers: support enhanced color matching Monitors/Displays: implement DVI connector; enhanced color matching Audio: support WaveRT miniport WDM driver Input devices: kernel mode drivers use Kernel Mode Driver Framework (KMDF); support non- legacy connectors Graphics: support Aero visual theme; implement DVI connection All drivers: achieve minimum Driver Quality Rating

Longhorn Logo “Estimated” Schedule Longhorn Logo Client Requirements Draft 0.6 Formal “Gold” Requirements Summer ‘05 Draft 0.7 Driver and HW requirements proposed Winter ‘05 Draft 0.9 All requirements are final Spring ‘06 Draft 0.5 HW requirements proposedSummer ‘05 Draft 0.6 FW requirements proposedWinter ‘05 Draft 0.7 Driver and HW requirements proposedSpring ‘06 Draft 0.9 All requirements are finalFall ‘06 Longhorn Logo Server Requirements

Summary The "Silver" Logo program is identical to former “logo” level program The new "Gold" level program includes and extends the “Silver” logo level by Adding requirements focused on performance and capabilities Adding requirements categories for devices that make up the PC Ecosystem The "Gold" Logo program rewards investments in marketing and development Not all product types will be recognized "Gold" level program is more responsive to industry changes

Call to Action Review the preliminary description of the new "Gold" logo level Review directional requirements Assess how the “Gold” Logo program may complement your product designs and planning Look for the first formal release of the "Gold" logo requirements at the draft 0.6 version of the Windows Longhorn Logo Program 3.0 requirements document Formal feedback process at draft 0.6 release
