Outline Introduction – Physics motivation – J-PARC facility France-Japan collaboration in the COMET experiment at J-PARC France-Japan collaboration in muon g-2/EDM experiment at J-PARC Summary

Role of muon physics in LHC era Direct search (Energy Frontier) LHC, ILC – Higher energy for heavier new particle Indirect search (Intensity Frontier) Charged LFV/g-2/EDM – L = L SM + L BSM – “Slight” difference from SM prediction E1E1 E2E2 M E1+E1 > M~O(>100GeV) E1E1 E2E2 M E3E3 E4E4 E3E3 E4E4 E1E1 E2E2 M E3E3 E4E4 E1+E1=E 3 +E4 <M

Indirect searches using muons Charged LFV μ  eγ search – PSI – Br (μ  eγ) < 5.4x (90% C.L.) μ-e conversion search – SINDRUM 7x – J-PARC, (Phase I) & (Phase II) – FNAL, Muon g-2/EDM g-2 measurement – BNL – a μ exp -a μ SM = +3.3 σ – d μ < 2.7x e cm (90%C.L.) New measurements – J-PARC 0.1 ppm for g-2 / O( ) for EDM – FNAL

COMET and g-2/EDM Mu-e conversion search Muon g-2/EDM measurements 2900 mm 3500 mm Annex of the current existing hall 8GeV, pulsed proton beam (MR) to produce high-intensity muon beam Staging approach Phase I to achieve sensitivity and then Phase II Funding approved in JFY 2012 supplementary budget High-intensity muon beam produced by 3GeV proton beam from RCS Muon acceleration through muonium

COMET Mu-e conversion search at J-PARC

COMET at J-PARC – Staging approach – Phase I Beam background study and achieve intermediate sensitivity of GeV - 3.2kW, ~3 weeks DAQ – Phase II 8GeV - 56kW, 1 year DAQ to achieve the COMET final goal of sensitivity Phase I Phase II μ e q q μ e q q

France-Japan collaboration in COMET COMET Phase I – Construction of the muon transport solenoid down to the 1 st 90 degree bend – 8GeV, 3.2kW power to achieve sensitivity in a few weeks running CDC and Triggering counter surrounding a muon stopping target – Mu-e conversion signal identified with an energetic electron of 105MeV emitted from a muonic atom with delayed timing LPNHE muon group participation was approved by the COMET collaboration in 2012 Dec. – Abundant experience in developing tracking software – Muon beam measurement (or target) using a silicon detector JSPS grant approval for detector construction

MUON G-2/EDM MEASUREMENTS

12 Resonant Laser Ionization of Muonium (~10 6  + /s) Graphite target (20 mm) 3 GeV proton beam ( 333 uA) Surface muon beam (28 MeV/c, 4x10 8 /s) Muonium Production (300 K ~ 25 meV ⇒ 2.3 keV/c) Silicon Tracker 66 cm diameter Super Precision Magnetic Field (3T, ~1ppm local precision)
