HEALTH CHAPTER 12 By: Ky Price

Telemedicine Telemedicine systems which are sometimes called telemedicine, they allow medical consultations to take place when the doctor and patient are in separate physical locations. Store and forward telemedicine systems are used when real-time communication is not essential such as diagnostic tests

Various types Real time technologies like video conferencing is used when face to face communication is needed between Doctor and Patient, or Doctor to Doctor. Tele-surgery is operating on a remote patient is in the making, the Da Vinci surgical system is in the making for further advancement Remote patient monitoring is a system used with allows patients to return home yet still be closely monitored by medical staff

Disadvantages The security of Tele-medicine is the biggest issue, sending sensitive data over NTWICS and TLS encryption or the use of VPN’s are used

Electronic Medical Records (EMR) EMR’s store patient data in computerized data based Traditional systems store medical record in centralized database personal health records (PHR) These records might be stored in a cloud based system Benefits -Can be accessed by many people and can be transferred and restored instantly

Cont. Data protection act and health insurance portability and accountability (HIPPA) address the privacy issue of data Opt in approach requires patients to give consent of their data being accessed E prescriptions or electronic prescriptions automatically generate and send prescriptions to pharmacies - systems more advanced in this aspect link to medical expert systems which can suggest alternative and cheaper drugs or alert complications to pharmacist.

Medical Expert Systems Expert systems sometimes called clinical decision making since the early 1970s Virtual reality therapy systems have been developed to improve the treatment of PTSD and certain phobias Patient stimulators- feature computerized system's which mimic functions of the human body

Online Medical Advice Diagnostics sites operated by government or individual clinics offer information on common illnesses and symptoms Support group sites are another form of online health advice - Risks include the authenticity of the authors

Medical Research Disease mapping- used to map outbreaks Health map- similar to google maps to show latest health news and alerts globally
