Features of a Gurudwara Sikhism By Miss Gill

Learning objective: To know some of the key features of a Gurudwara.

The Guru Granth Sahib The Guru Granth Sahib, is the Sikh Holy Book. The Guru Granth sahib is kept in a large hall called ‘Darbar Sahib’. The Guru Granth Sahib is always kept in a high place.

Nishan Sahib The Nishan Sahib is a triangular orange flag with the Sikh symbol of a Khanda in the middle of it. It represents the values of the Sikh faith.

Langar Langar or free kitchen is the part of a Gurudwara where meals are served to the worshippers who have come to pray. Although some Gurudwaras have tables and chairs, as a tradition, worshippers are expected to sit on the floor.

Sangat The sangat is a holy congregation of people. They sit and listen to the prayers that are being read out in the Gurudwara. What do you notice about this sangat?

Golak A Golak is known as the collection box, that is normally found in front of the Guru Granth Sahib, where worshippers put their offerings of coins or paper notes, before bowing or kneeling down to the Guru Granth Sahib.

Activity Pick on feature of a Gurudwara that we have looked at, and write a litle bit about it.
