Plot Diagram
Plot (definition) Plot is the organized pattern or sequence of events that make up a story. Every plot is made up of a series of incidents that are related to one another.
1. Exposition This usually occurs at the beginning of a short story. Here the characters are introduced. We also learn about the setting of the story. Most importantly, we are introduced to the main conflict (main problem).
Protagonist vs. Antagonist Protagonist=The main character, usually the “good” guy. (Think Luke Skywalker) The story usually focuses on the protagonist Antagonist=The character who usually has conflict with the protagonist. (Think Darth Vadar!)
Conflict Conflict is the struggle that characters face in a story. If there was no conflict, you would not have a story! Internal-Character struggles with a decision or problem External-Character faces a problem from outside forces
Types of Conflict Man vs. Man- character struggles with another person, or animal (This is external conflict) Man vs. Self- character faces struggles within him or herself (This is internal conflict)
Types of Conflict Man vs. Nature- character struggles with storms, natural disasters etc.(External conflict) Man vs. Society- Character struggles with ideas, rules or norms of a society (This is external conflict, but may lead to internal conflict)
Theme The main subject or topic that is being described in a piece of writing or a move. Ex: The quest for power is the underlying theme of the short story.
2. Rising Action This part of the story begins to develop the conflict(s). A building of interest or suspense occurs.
3. Climax This is the turning point of the story. Usually the main character comes face to face with a conflict. The main character will change in some way.
4. Falling Action All loose ends of the plot are tied up. The conflict(s) and climax are taken care of.
5. Resolution The story comes to a reasonable ending.
