National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) NERSC View of the Greenbook Bill Saphir Chief Architect NERSC Center Division, LBNL 6/23/2004

Role of the Greenbook Provides the scientific justification for NERSC systems, services, activities Provides guidance to NERSC on how to best serve its users

Greenbook Messages The Greenbook clearly describes –What science is/can be enabled by High Performance Computing facilities –The need for large centralized computing resources The Greenbook should also talk about –Non-computational requirements –Infrastructure support –Services –Other activities in support of high performance computing

Areas of Interest User services (training, documentation) Systems management Network services Impact of algorithms on system requirements Global shared storage (GUPFS) needs and expectations System balance requirements – I/O rates, interconnect speed, etc.

Areas of Interest (2) Algorithmic and discipline collaboration Visualization systems and services Grid services Mass storage Technology assessment and evaluation for procurements and strategic planning Special services Account and allocation services

The Greenbook Opportunity This is your opportunity to let the DOE and NERSC know what you need! Today’s meeting kicks off the Greenbook process –We will listen carefully and summarize what we’ve heard and haven’t heard this afternoon –Discussion and task assignments following
