What are landforms? Landforms are the natural shapes or features of land and water. Landforms are the natural shapes or features of land and water. There are many different types of landforms found on the earth. There are many different types of landforms found on the earth.

Mountain A mountain is the highest kind of land. A mountain has a peak.

Valley A valley is low land between hills or mountains.

Plain A plain is flat, grassy land. A plain is also called a prairie.

Desert A desert is dry land with few plants. A desert does not get much rain.

Plateau A plateau is a flat area higher than the land around it. A plateau has a flat top.

River A river is a long body of water that flows through the land.

Lake A lake is a body of water that has land on all sides.

Coast A coast is the area where the ocean touches the land. Salt water and fresh water mix at the coast to form estuaries.

Ocean An Ocean is a very large body of salty water that covers a large area.

Island An island is land that has water on all sides.
