The Architect’s Notebook

What is an Architect’s Notebook? An architect’s notebook is a book in which an architect will formally document, in chronological order, all work that is associated with a specific design project. Each architect has an architect’s notebook. Architects record all related project work by hand.

An architect’s notebook records… Written ideas Sketches (preferably annotated) Work session summaries Research findings Interview information: who was contacted, when, and what was discussed or learned

Architect’s Notebook Standards 2. Notebooks are bound. 3. No pages are removed from the notebook for any reason. 1. Pages are sequentially numbered in ink on the top outside edge.

accessed 3/2/06 4. The notebook is stored in a safe location when it is not being used. 5. When the notebook is full, a new one begins and picks up where the other ended. 6. All figures and calculations are clearly labeled. Architect’s Notebook Standards

accessed 3/1/ accessed 3/1/06 7. Entries start at the top of the page, working left-to- right and top-to-bottom. 8. Markers that bleed through the paper are not used. 9. Inserted items are permanently attached (glue is preferred). Loose leaf items do not belong in the notebook. Architect’s Notebook Standards

10. The date that each entry was made is clearly indicated. 11. Consistent recording methods for ideas, references, test results, etc. are used throughout the notebook. Architect’s Notebook Standards
