Higher Physical Education Structures and Strategies Basketball: Roles and Responsibilities

Structures and Strategies: (2:1:2 Zone) Forward Centre Point GuardShooting Guard Best ball handler: Decides which play will be used, good vision, takes ball up the court, tends to be smaller player, quick mover, very good passing ability. First player to pressure the ball in zone defence (if on ball side), good tactical awareness Good ball- handler, there to assist point guard, will have better shooting ability from outside the key, First player to pressure the ball in zone defence (if on ball side), quick dribbler, good tactical awareness, good passing ability. Usually the tallest player in the team, matches up with opposition centre, aims to dominate the key area at both baskets for offensive and defensive rebounds, usually good shooting from very near the basket Forwards are there to provide width in attack and to close out wide players in defence. Can be very tall players, powerful at driving to the basket and quick moving. Can also be very accurate shooters outside and inside the key Roles and Responsibilities Kobe Bryant Larry Bird Shaquille O’ Neale Michael Jordan Karl Malone

Point Guards The Guard will tend to be the best ball handler in the team. The guard is responsible for bringing the ball up the court each time and will dictate which ‘play’ the team will use. The guard is usually the smaller player in the team and the fastest dribbler. The guard must have an in depth knowledge of the team s tactics and positional responsibilities The guard is the first player to press the ball on defence

Forwards Forwards are the players in the team who attack from the wing areas of the court. Forwards provide the width in attack and close down the space in wide areas when defending. Forwards are taller than guards and are expected to drive into the key area when attacking Forwards can switch sides of the court at any time

Centre Centres are the tallest players in the team. Centres are expected to win rebounds both offensively and defensively. Centres will spend the majority of their time underneath the baskets Centres will be responsible for countering the attacks of the opposition’s centre Centres tend to be more effective closer to the basket

What Position would you play? Why?
