Native Plants: Seeds

How do seeds travel? ? *Introduce essential question—How do seeds travel? “Have you ever wondered how plants can grow on their own? Does someone plant the seeds that grow the plants in forests?” Ask a few students to share their initial thoughts. “They plant themselves after they are released from the flower or fruit.”

How do people travel? Plane Car Bus By Foot Bike Boat “I want three students to share a way that people can travel.” (car, plane, bus, bike, boat, etc.) “Seeds do not usually travel the same way that humans do, but they do have just as many ways.” “Today we are going to explore some of the ways that seeds travel so that they can grow new plants far away from the original plant.” Bike Boat

The Tiny Seed Let’s Watch a Video! “Let’s watch a video about how seeds travel.” Click on link to watch video.

Ways Seeds Travel Water Wind Insects Animals “The video talked about the wind carrying the seeds.” “Can you think of other ways seeds can travel?” (animals, water, insects, etc.).

How can humans move seeds? “How can humans help seeds travel?” “We can do this by having them stick to our cars, or we can buy the seeds at the store and plant them where we want them to grow.”

Life of a Seed Acorn “Seeds are an important part of the plant because it is what makes the plant grow.” Instruct students to take out blank paper and coloring utensils. “We are going to draw the life of a seed, let’s go through an example first.” Go through the ‘How do Seeds Travel’ example using an acorn.

Acorns grow on oak trees. What do acorns grow on? Acorns grow on oak trees. “What do acorns grow on?” “Acorns Grow on Oak Trees.”

Squirrels pick up acorns when they drop to the ground. How do acorns travel? Squirrels pick up acorns when they drop to the ground. “How do acorns travel?” “Squirrels pick up acorns when they drop to the ground.”

How do acorns travel? Squirrels bury acorns, and if they do not come back for them, the acorns could grow into an oak tree. “Squirrels bury acorns, and if they do not come back for them, the acorns could grow into an oak tree.”

First draw 3 boxes on your blank piece of paper. Let’s do an Activity! First draw 3 boxes on your blank piece of paper. First draw 3 boxes on your blank piece of paper.

Draw Your Favorite Plant “Now, everyone can pick what plant they want to draw. Start out with a picture of your plant in the first box.”

Draw How the Seed Travels “Using the information from the video and what we discussed together, in the second box draw how the seeds travel.”

Draw Where the Seed Lands and Starts to Grow “Finish up with drawing a picture of where the seeds lands and starts growing a new plant in the third box.”

Where the Seed Lands & Grows Life of a Seed Favorite Plant How the Seed Travels Give the students about five minutes to draw their pictures. Where the Seed Lands & Grows

Let’s Share! Have 3-4 students share their drawings.

Polite Bite Rules: Take at least one bite Only say polite things Conduct local fruit or veggie tasting. Instruct each student to take a ‘polite bite’ (eat at least one bite and only say polite things). Go through some examples of things they could say if they do or do not like the foods. Identify where the samples came from (farm, WI, etc.).

How do seeds travel? *Review essential question—How do seeds travel? “Seeds are an important part of plant growth. If the seeds cannot travel and plant themselves, then plants would not continue to grow.”

Challenge “On your way home I want you to see if you can see any seeds floating through the air like in the video. Then when you are eating dinner, see if you can spot any seeds in your foods.”
