Do we care what they think? –Describe flood of dissipation in which we are not to run. flood indicates excess or profusion – a sink: stagnant water remaining after an inundation (only NT use) –Two Greek words »asotia – dissolute »anachusis – overflowing or pouring out –Alford – ‘a state of moral degradation or spiritual dejection into which one sinks or from which one cannot free one's self.’

The First Epistle of Peter July 12, 2015 Bob Eckel 2 I Peter 4:1-6 - “The Proper Attitude in Suffering - Part 2” –of riot or living wastefully, i.e. Luke 15:13 (prodigal son) –run means to keep in company with, as in a troop –What kind of speaking evil (of you, us) is this? To speak reproachfully, rail at, revile, blaspheme –1 Cor 4:12,13 - And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; being defamed, we entreat. We have been made as the filth of the world, the off scouring of all things until now. I Peter 4:5 - They will give an account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. –Notice the verb tenses here will give – future, active, indicative (one day whenever) Him who is – present, active (always ready) to judge – aorist, active (once, and at any time) –How will they give an account or plead their case to Him who is ready?

The First Epistle of Peter July 12, 2015 Bob Eckel 3 I Peter 4:1-6 - “The Proper Attitude in Suffering - Part 2” And notice He is ready! –Luke 12:40 - Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not. give an account – logos –Here indicates an explanation »And how will a gracious God respond? –Why the living (zaō) and the dead (nekros)? This relates to the time of His coming. –the living – alive, on earth »1 Tim 5:6 - But she who lives in pleasure is dead while she lives. –the dead »Mal 3: Your words have been stout against me, saith the Lord. Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee? Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts? »Jude 1:15 - To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him. »John 5:25-29

The First Epistle of Peter July 12, 2015 Bob Eckel 4 I Peter 4:1-6 - “The Proper Attitude in Suffering - Part 2” I Peter 4:6 - For this reason the gospel was preached also to those who are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. –For what reason? –the gospel was preached also to those who are dead – what’s that all about? was preached – aorist passive indicative –When persecution in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ was expected. dead physically or spiritually – a great debate exists here? –Physically is best (see v.5) and the verb interpreted as once preached A second chance? –Heb 9:27 - And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit

The First Epistle of Peter July 12, 2015 Bob Eckel 5 I Peter 4:1-6 - “The Proper Attitude in Suffering - Part 2” might be judged – aorist, passive, subjunctive –Judgment of believers by unbelievers or of unbelievers by God – another controversy? »By the Gentiles who walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries (v.3) – persecution »Wuest – ‘These Christians were judged with respect to the flesh, that is, with respect to their earthly existence in the body.’ »1 Pet 4:14 - If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified »1 Cor 11:32 - But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world. live – present, active, subjunctive –On earth or in heaven – another debated topic? –1 Pet 4:17 - For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? –John 6:58 - “This is the bread which came down from heaven, not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread lives forever” Either way you win!
