Choice Roel Becker the Netherlands

Choice-Debate Central question: “should an individual be allowed to make a certain choice?” Compare individuals making choice vs. Government making choice to all Should people be obliged to get insurance?

Why the individual? (Principal) We believe people have certain rights, freedoms. These are hard to explain, but are important.

Why the individual (practical?) People like that they can choose. People know best what they want.

Why not the government? Blanket Ban Select group Often cater to majority

Why not the individual? Peer Pressure Lack of Information Time-inconsistency Over-estimation of unlikely things

Why the government? Smart people Lots of time Not personally involved

Now practice! (1) These are all motions that were set at the World Schools Debating Championships Try to apply all mechanisms to all the motions

Now practice! (2) THBT important decisions about children’s health should be made by medical professionals and not by their parents THW allow prisoners to choose death over life sentence THW cut welfare support on compulsive gamblers THW ban alcohol

Now practice! (3) THW allow single parents to raise their children behind bars THW make voting compulsory THW Ban Children From Becoming Professional Models This house would allow prisoners to volunteer for drug trials in exchange for lighter sentences. This House would ban the use of zero-hour contracts

Thank you! For any questions, remarks, etc. Regarding this subject or (Dutch) debating in particular Please contact
