Find the value of x in the 2 congruent polygons. A B C A’ B’ C’ 45° 5x°

6-5 Symmetry How do I identify lines of symmetry and rotational symmetry?

Questions:Notes: What is line symmetry? A figure has line symmetry if it can be folded over and one half of the figure matches the other half. Example: What is a line of symmetry? The line that you folded an image on so that half of the figure matches the other half.

Concept Check Discuss with your table partner whether or not the following images have line symmetry. If they do, how many lines of symmetry do they have?

Questions:Notes: What is rotational symmetry? When a figure can be rotated less than 360° and an identical figure results. Example: What is the angle of rotation? The number of degrees that a figure is rotated so that it is identical to the initial image.

Concept Check Discuss with your table partner whether or not the following images have rotational symmetry. If they do, what is the angle of rotation?

Homework Draw an image that has at least one line of symmetry and one image that had rotational symmetry. This will be worth 2 homework grades (20 points for each image).
