Presentation transcript:

Urinary system organs: - 2 kidneys (T12-L3) - 2 ureters, connect kidneys to bladder - urinary bladder - urethra Kidneys: - control blood composition filter blood 60 times/day 180 L (45 gal) of filtrate formed daily 1.5 L eliminated as urine - help regulate BP by secreting renin - gluconeogenesis - erythropoiesis

Protective coverings of kidneys (deep to superficial): - renal capsule - adipose capsule - renal fascia

Nephrons = functional unit of kidneys Tubules

1. Cortical Nephron

2. Juxtamedullary Nephron

Renal corpuscle = glomerular capsule and glomerulus (blood capillary), filtration site a. parietal layer - outer covering b. capsular space - separates parietal and visceral c. visceral layer - Podocytes Endothelial capsular membrane (filtering membrane) = visceral layer of capsule + endothelium of glomerulus.
