Presentation transcript:

COMPASS BEARINGS A compass bearing is a route of travel to follow…… We measure bearings using degrees (360 o ) or mils (6400). Bearings are always measured clockwise from North (zero line). The magnetic declination for your area must be set on your compass before taking a bearing! Red Star OHP-1 North 0 o ANGLE BEARING

STEPS IN TAKING A COMPASS BEARING 1. Open the cover of the compass to about o. 2. Place the safety cord around your neck. Extend your arm and hold the compass flat at eye level. 3. Face the object. Use the sighting line in your compass to ensure that you keep all the parts in a straight line Red Star OHP-2

STEPS IN TAKING A COMPASS BEARING (cont’d) 4. Turn the compass dial until the red end of the magnetic needle is inside the orienting arrow. Remember: Do not look at the compass dial - look at its reflection in the mirror! 5. Open the cover and look at the number next to the luminous index pointer. 6. This number is your compass bearing!! You are ready to start hiking!! Red Star OHP-3

BACKBEARINGS Backbearings are the opposite reading of a compass bearing. To take a backbearing: 1. Read the number opposite the luminous point. 2. Turn the dial so that this number now appears at the luminous index pointer. 3. This new bearing will take you back to where you started from! St. John’s Fredericton Halifax Red Star OHP-4

FOLLOWING A GIVEN BEARING 1. Turn the compass dial until the bearing appears opposite the luminous index pointer. 2. Place the safety cord around your neck and raise the compass to eye level. 3. Turn your body until the red end of the magnetic needle is lined up with the orienting arrow. 4. Look through the sight and select an object in your path. 5. Close the compass and hike to the object. When you reach it, choose a new landmark and repeat the steps Red Star OHP-5
