Where is Barbados located? Barbados situated just east of the Caribbean Sea, is a West Indian continental island- nation in the western Atlantic Ocean.

Flag, Motto, Anthem: The motto SERVIAM means that we will serve because we want to be like Jesus who said: “I am a servant among you”. We will serve because we recognize each person as a child of God. A spirit of SERVICE is a special characteristic of an Ursuline Student

Sports: As in other Caribbean countries of British colonial heritage, cricket is very popular on the island. Barbadians play on the West Indies cricket team. In addition to several warm-up matches and six "Super Eight" matches, and the country hosted the final of the 2007 Cricket World Cup. They have had many great cricketers such as Sir Garfield Sobers, Sir Frank Worrell, Joel Garner and Sir Clyde Walcott. In golf, the Barbados Open is an annual stop on the European Seniors Tour. In December 2006 the WGC-World Cup took place at the country's Sandy Lane resort on the Country Club course, an eighteen-hole course designed by Tom Fazio. The Barbados Golf Club is the other main course on the island. Sanctioned by the PGA European Tour to host a PGA Seniors Tournament in 2003 and it has also hosted the Barbados Open on several occasions. Basketball is a popular sport played at school or college and is increasing in popularity, as is volleyball, though volleyball is mainly played indoors. At certain beaches, such as Brandons beach in St. Michael, it is common to see people gather to play beach volleyball. Motorsports also play a role, with Rally Barbados occurring each summer and currently being listed on the FIA NACAM calendar. Other sports played include hockey, table tennis,, football, rugby, polo and swimming.

Attractions, landmarks and points of interest: The Gun Hill Signal Station is located in the parish of St. George and provides a magnificent view of the entire island. There were a series of signal stations built in From these stations one could see ships approaching Barbados and signal each other in warning of the approaching ships. Gun Hill was restored by the Barbados National Trust and now houses a collection of military memorabilia. An officer stationed at Gun Hill in 1868 carved a magnificent lion out of a single piece of rock - which still stands guard to the station. There is a small souvenir shop and a restaurant on the grounds and the view is magnificent!

Heroes/Role Models: Sarah Ann Gill (16 February 1795 – 25 February 1866) was named as one of Barbados's national heroes on the basis of her exploits during the slavery era. She was born of a black mother and a white father (Gill), and baptized with the name Ann. The circumstances of her birth disqualified her from any meaningful participation in social and economic life, in a society which was based on racism. In Barbadian society, anyone with a taint of African ancestry, however distant, was considered the natural inferior of all persons of unmixed European descent. Sarah married, like her, of mixed ancestry, and inherited property from him at his death when she was 28 years old. The couple had one son who, apparently, died before reaching full adulthood.

What do you like the most about Barbados? Sampling Barbados food is a must while vacationing on the island...One of the main features of Barbadian food is of course the influence of the African, European, Asian and Indian cultures on its preparation and flavour. You will also be delighted to know that the preparation of food in Barbados uses a variety of techniques. Including the Wok, the grill and the wood stone oven to enhance the flavour and bring that unique Barbadian taste to your dining experience. Another advantage of preparing Barbados food is the abundance of fresh fish including the very popular flying fish in the waters surrounding the island.
