Types of Maps  Physical map = shows the terrain and natural features of the land.  Political map = shows human made boundaries, names of countries, cities and bodies of water.  Thematic map = shows information about specific theme, such as climate or population.  Directional map = shows how to get from one place to another

Components of a Map  Compass – tells direction  Scale – tells distance  Legend/Key – explains symbols  Grid – helps to find location

Geography Vocabulary  Island – a body of land surrounded by water  Oasis – a spot of fertile land in a desert  Delta – a triangular area of land formed from deposits at the mouth of a river.  Plateau = a broad flat area of land higher than surrounding land.  Plain – flat land  Valley – low land between hills or mountains.  Canyon – a narrow deep valley with steep sides.  Harbor- body of water surrounded by water and a safe place for ships to dock.  River – stream of water  Coast – land located along side the ocean or sea.  Tributary - stream or river that flows into a larger river.  Bay – part of an ocean or lake extending into the land.
