Can one person change the world? A Reading Ideas, Nonfiction Unit

1. A Warrior’s Heart: Becoming a Man of Compassion and Courage, by Eric Greitens

Eric Greitens loved Choose Your Own Adventure stories as a kid. The kind of stories where at the end of each chapter you would have to make a decision as to what the hero in the adventure would do next: Make a gravity defying leap over the ravine to get to the other side safely? Or, climb down into the ravine and deal with the danger of landmines buried in the valley floor? The choice was up to You! Eric’s adventurous personality led him to serve his country as a Navy SEAL - spanning the globe with the pursuit of helping others make positive, life changing decisions. He chose to live his life with compassion and courage. What will your choice be? Can one person change the world?

1. A Warrior’s Heart: Becoming a Man of Compassion and Courage, by Eric Greitens “You stand in freezing water up to your chest. Every muscle in your body throbs with pain. You are exhausted beyond anything you could ever imagine, and all around you the night air carries the curses and groans of others who are gutting it out like you, who are trying to survive the night. Most won’t. What do you do?” Can one person change the world?

2. Outcasts United: The Story of A Refugee Soccer Team That Changed a Town, by Warren St. John

One Coach. One Team. United. *** Luma Mefleh changed the lives of dozens of young refugees - new to the United States - with a soccer ball, her emphasis on the importance of hard work, and the perseverance to take on the challenges thrown their way by those that saw them as OUTCASTS. *** Can one person change the world?

“The challenges the Fugees faced - subpar gear, no cheering section, and the hostility they sometimes felt from opposing teams of American kids who resented the newcomers - only brought the boys closer. They sensed they had something to prove.” Can one person change the world? 2. Outcasts United: The Story of A Refugee Soccer Team That Changed a Town, by Warren St. John

Which book will choose you? 1.A Warrior’s Heart: Becoming a Man of Compassion and Courage, by Eric Greitens 2.Outcasts United: The Story of A Refugee Soccer Team That Changed a Town, by Warren St. John
