Presentation transcript:

1Daily Warm-Up Exercises Day 22 What type of rock is limestone? sedimentary If you place a drop of acid on a sample of limestone, it will fizz. What does this show? The limestone contains calcite (calcium carbonate).

2 Limestone Ingredients (Part 1) Investigation 5 Limestone

33 Limestone Environment Discuss in groups: In what kind of environment does limestone form? Probably a marine environment because some limestone contains shell fossils and some forms from the shells of sea creatures.

44 Calcite Why does limestone fizz with acid? because it contains contains calcite (calcium carbonate) Where might the calcite come from? (list suggestions on board)

5 Seawater Scenario We have some water that is similar to ancient seawater. It's called limewater, and it contains calcium hydroxide. We will simulate the effect of an animal living and exhaling in the sea by using a straw to blow exhaled air through a cup of limewater.

6 Seawater Investigation Follow the directions on page 37 to conduct your seawater investigation. What is the purpose of the control cup? To see if anything would happen if we didn't blow into the cup.

7 Wrap Up What are your ideas about the appearance of the white material? Do you think the white material could have anything to do with limestone formation? What additional information will we need to get when we continue our limestone investigation?
