Hannah DeLorme Dr. Harrison Yang Edu. 505 Exploring the life of the Amish Hannah DeLorme Dr. Harrison Yang Edu. 505

Introduction Did you know that you have many Amish families living in your community of Altmar, NY? Yes you see their buggies, but do you know why they don’t drive cars, why Amish children don’t attend school, and why they wear the clothes that they do? Your journey through this Webquest will help you and your classmates better understand the Amish culture and hopefully answer all of your questions.

Task Please work with your partner and use the worksheet to explore the websites and fill in the answers as you go. Work with your partner to create a Venn Diagram comparing the Amish culture to your own culture. (Use the graphic organizer that has been provided for you.) Complete the online activities when directed to do so.

Process With your partner, begin your adventure by clicking on the websites. While you explore, fill in your worksheet. Complete the online activities when directed to do so. Once you have checked out all the websites, begin thinking about the similarities and differences between your culture and the Amish culture. Get ready to fill in your venn-diagram!

Resources http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amish- Use this site to fill in some of the questions on your worksheet. http://www.amish.net/faq.asp- When you get to this site, think about what you would ask an Amish person. Write your answer on your worksheet. http://www.holycrosslivonia.org/amish/amishfaq.htm- Look specifically at “The Amish and the Modern World,” to fill in questions on your worksheet. http://titletrakkmovienews.blogspot.com/2008/01/saving-sarah-cain-trailer.html- Please watch the video clip and discuss with your partner how the children would have felt. Write your answer on your worksheet.

Evaluation Students’ grades will be based on a number system that ranges from 1-4. 1 being very poor and 4 being exceptional. Worksheet- Is the worksheet completed with higher level thinking and thoroughness applied to the answers? Participation- Did the student work well with their partner and engage in good discussion? Mechanics- Did they write neatly and spend time on their work? Knowledge- Did the student appear to learn something about the Amish? Were they able to apply this knowledge and analysis it for the venn diagram?

Conclusion By the time we have completed this Webquest you will have a greater knowledge about the Amish. You will be able to compare your own culture to the culture of the Amish. You will have been introduced to some of the discriminations that the Amish face and how it would feel to be Amish. You will also understand why the Amish practice the values that they do. I hope that all your questions have been answered!

How are the two cultures the same? Here is an example of the Venn diagram worksheet that you and your partner will be completing. How are the two cultures the same? Amish Culture Your culture
