Section 1.1 Number Sets

Goal: To identify all sets of real numbers and the elements in them.

Number Classification Natural(N) numbers are the counting numbers. {1,2,3,…223,224} Whole(W) numbers are natural numbers and zero. {0,1,2,3} Integers are whole numbers and their opposites. {…,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3…}

Number Classification (cont) Rational numbers can be written as a fraction. {-5/6, -1/2,0/6,1.2,3.5555….} Irrational numbers cannot be written as a fraction. { …, } All of these numbers are real numbers.

Number Classifications Subsets of the Real Numbers I - Irrational Z - Integers W - Whole N - Natural Q - Rational

Classify each number -1 real, rational, integer real, rational, integer, whole, natural real, irrational real, rational real, rational, integer, whole real, rational
