Objectives  Define Mobile E-Health  Review hardware used in mobile e-health  Review software, applications, and usability in mobile e-health  Postulate future uses for mobile e-health  Review clinical information system (e-pocrates)

Objectives  Review the advantages / disadvantages of e- health  Review ethical/legal Concerns  Review informatics competencies  Explain the functions / responsibilities of the informatics nurse.  Summarize

Definitions & Descriptions  Mobile E-Health Defined (McGonigle & Mastrain, 2009)  Desktops, Laptops, notebooks, etc.  Cell phones, PDA’s, I-Phone’s,  Tricorders?  Anything electronic and mobile  Uses …

 Mobile Technology gives us -freedom -access -safety/security -responsibility

Hardware  Laptops  Net Books  PDA’S- Personal Data Assistants  Cellular Phones/ I-Phone

I-Phone  I-Phone- the ability to combine both PDA and cell phone

 The iPhone has a great web browser, which is able to display web pages as they are, and not a reduced version of the web pages you like. This is a great advantage compared to other smartphone, which are able only to display mobile versions of web pages (Coliveira, 2009)

Software and Applications  Microsoft Windows OS  I-Phone Apps Store  More applications being developed  E-pocrates  What does the future hold ?

E-pocrates  Medication Application/Database  Provides information on medications, administration, considerations  Also an aid to diagnosis many common ailments.  Demo use via U-tube HOk

Information System Review  Clinical information system  Used by direct healthcare team members  Functions in multiple ways  Multiple configurations (Coliveira, 2009)  Recommendations for use

Advantages of E-Health  Continuity of Care  Centralized Health Records  Incorporation of Patients as active participant  Collaboration of health care team  Improved decision making (Saba and McCormick, 2000)

Advantages of E-health  Education (of patients and healthcare team)  Higher quality of healthcare  Removes geographic barriers  Possibility to lower health costs  Improve health care data collection.  ( Hebda and Czar, 2009)

Disadvantages of E-Health  Cost  Availability  Technology  Education

Ethical / Legal Issues  Privacy  Confidentiality  Security  Liability  Data Transmission  (Saba and McCormick, 2000)

Informatics Competencies  Must be able to use/ understand technologies  Computer skills  Must be able to adapt to changing environments

Functions and Responsibilities of Nurses DO NO HARM

Summary of E-Health  Computers are changing all aspects of nursing.  It is important that nurses embrace the changes to provide better care.  (Portable) e-health takes us one step closer to achieving the goal of providing quality healthcare for everyone, everywhere.
