Absolute Value The distance from a number to zero (on a number line).
Just how far from zero are you?
Presentation transcript:

Which is closer to the boat; the bird or the fish?

Absolute value is the distance a number is from zero.

The absolute value of -3 is 3 because it is 3 spaces from zero

The absolute value of 2 is 2 because it is 2 spaces from zero

What is the absolute value of 5?

What is the absolute value of -1?

The number line shows the depth of a whale in feet (below sea level). What is its absolute value?

 Distance cannot be negative, so the absolute value cannot be negative.  Opposite numbers will have the same absolute value.

This says, “WHAT IS THE ABSOLUTE VALUE OF -3?”

True or False? The absolute value of a number is always greater than or equal to that number.

True or False? – x can never be positive

A negative sign in front of the absolute value symbol should be read as “take the opposite of”.
