Marcive for GPO Records FAQ’s Demo Future

Marcive FAQ 1 What is Marcive: Marcive is a company that provides cataloging records. The IU subscription with Marcive provides catalog records for federal documents from the U.S. Government Printing Office. All records will have SuDocs Classification Numbers. Notes: Covers only U.S. Documents (no state or International) Serials are excluded (but a few sneak in when first issued as monographs.) Covers only materials since October 2000.

Marcive FAQ 2 What is received: SLS, Ongoing Full Records and Changed “Electronic only” records * SLS records are brief, provisional records for new items. SLS stands for Shipping List Service because the records cover specific shipping lists of depository items. SLS records arrive weekly for print, microfiche, and tangible electronic products, such as CD-ROMs. * Ongoing Full Records replace the SLS records. Files come Monthly and will be loaded into IUCAT, overlaying the SLS records. Clean-up to remove duplicate records will need to be completed, especially with initial loads. * Changed “Electronic only” records will be received in a separate file and update records with electronic addresses, PERLs. Note: We’ve not dealt with these yet—so procedures are forthcoming.

Marcive FAQ 3 Who is participating? * IPFW, IUB, IUI LAW, IUK, IUNW, IUPUI, IUSB, IUSE (Not IUB Law or IUE) * These are all depositories with the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP). * Marcive records match each library’s FDLP selection. Marcive Working Group: Gary Charbonneau, Mechael Charbonneau, Vania Goodwin, Lou Malcomb, Andrea Morrison, Cheryl Truesdell, Harriette Hemmasi. Distribution List:

Marcive FAQ 4 Why! 1. Unicorn single record 2. Some libraries used Marcive loads in Notis (IUPUI, IUI Law, IUNW, IUSE) 3. Quick provisional records (SLS records) 4. Automatic full bilbiographic record overlay 5. Updating of “electronic” records (hopefully) with better access to electronic addresses. Note: U.S. G.P.O. intends to transition all documents to electronic format

Marcive FAQ 5 Concerns Working Group and other IU Marcive Staff will continue to identify and work on procedures to troubleshoot and provide some uniformity in handling problems. * Duplicate Marcive Records * Multi-volume/part records * Monographs reclassed as serials * Clean up of Duplicate Records * ????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Sample Records SLS Record --- importance of TMP Ongoing Full Record Changed “Electronic Record”

Thanks….  To all who contributed for initial profiling, costs, and review of sample records  To Marcive Staff who worked with us on profiles, correcting files, and continue to review our service  To Gary for overseeing the loads, tests, and continues to assist with figuring out fixes.  To all Gov’t Pubs staff on all campuses for leading this change.  To all cataloging agents for assisting with these records.

Future Continue to refine procedures Troubleshooting – Clean up Let Andrea Morrison know if you are interested in joining the Marcive Swat team to “clean-up” the October-May File. ?
