Parallelism a.k.a. Parallel Structure Parallel structure is the placement of equal ideas in words, phrases, clauses, or sentences of similar types. This can happen at the word, phrase, or clause level. Tip: Check the structure on either side of commas and conjunctions (FANBOYS) to see if the structures, words, phrases, clauses, and verbs match.

Phrases With the -ing form (gerund) of words:-ing form (gerund)  Not Parallel: Mary likes to hike, swimming, and bicycling.  Parallel: Mary likes hiking, swimming, and bicycling. With infinitive phrases:infinitive  Not Parallel: Mary likes to hike, swimming, and to ride a bicycle.  Parallel: Mary likes to hike, to swim, and to ride a bicycle.  Parallel: Mary likes to hike, swim, and ride a bicycle.

Adjectives and Adverbs If a list begins with an adjective or adverb, continue the list with the same part of speech: Adverbs:  Not Parallel: The production manager was asked to write his report quickly, accurately, and in a detailed manner.  Parallel: The production manager was asked to write his report quickly, accurately, and thoroughly.
