Basic principals Right to life, survival and development The best interest of the child Protection from discrimination Participation (right to be heard in all issues that are of their concern.

Right to life, survival and development (6) Precondition for the realization of other human/ child rights Controversial issues: the right of the unborn child to life, euthanasia, the right of children to life in armed conflict, death penalty. Problems: Infant mortality in the poorest population, traffic safety, suicide of children.

The best interest of the child (3) Legal standard It Is an obligation to make the decision considering child led by his/her best interest. Conflicts of interests Elements Who Criteria Participation of a child

Protection from all discrimination (2) All rights guarantied by the Convention apply to all children without discrimination The State is obliged to provide protection to children from all forms of discrimination and take positive action to promote child rights.

Participation States Parties shall assure to the child who is capable of forming his or her own views the right to express those views freely in all matters affecting the child, the views of the child being given due weight in accordance with the age and maturity of the child.
