Extinguishing Worry March 15

Worry Tournament Vote on each pairing of things you would worry about. What will be the “champion worry”? There are plenty of things to worry about! Today  we discover why Jesus told us NOT to worry.

Listen for reasons not to amass treasures on earth. Matthew 6:19-24 (NIV) "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. [20] But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. [21] For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Listen for reasons not to amass treasures on earth. [22] "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. [23] But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! [24] "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.

Focus on Eternal Values What are examples of earthly treasures, heavenly treasures? What is the nature of earthly versus heavenly treasures that makes one easily gone and the other eternal? Why are the heart and our treasures inseparable? Earthly TreasuresHeavenly Treasures

Focus on Eternal Values What different adjectives describe the two different kinds of eyes of the body? (check different translations) Just what is it that is dark when we have a selfish eye? What happens to a person who tries to be loyal to more than one cause?

Focus on Eternal Values How does this apply in our lives when we try to satisfy both God and our own selfish desires? What can we do to make sure our “eyes” remain generous?

Focus on God’s Provision How would you define worry? Listen for how many times worry is mentioned in this passage.

Matthew 6:25-30 (NIV) "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? [26] Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? [27] Who of you by worrying can

Listen for how many times worry is mentioned in this passage. add a single hour to his life? [28] "And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. [29] Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. [30] If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

Focus on God’s Provision According to Jesus, what are we not supposed to worry about? List the examples from nature – members of God's creation that don’t worry. Jesus discourages his followers from worry, but what might be some positive reasons for worry or concern about future events?

Focus on God’s Provision What can be some bad results of worry ? How does worrying demonstrate a lack of faith in God? PhysicallyEmotionallySpiritually

Listen for what Jesus says a Christian should do that will make worry unnecessary. Matthew 6:31-34 (NIV) So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' [32] For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. [33] But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. [34] Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Focus on God’s Kingdom/Rule What do these verses say about our priorities? How do our priorities affect our worries? How does worry affect our witness? What does God do for His children when they keep the right perspective, refuse to worry, and trust Him? What is meant by “seek first His kingdom”? Then all the physical needs, the “decorations” of our lives will be sufficient

Application What issue in your life do you tend to worry about? – This week find ways you will demonstrate that you love, trust, and seek God above all in that worrisome situations – Example – if your bills worry you, demonstrate loving and trusting God by paying your tithe first

Application If you could measure your “worry pressure” how would it read? – Is it too high? – Leave your anxious care with Jesus by seeking first God’s Kingdom and His righteousness – Pray that God will enable you to love, trust, and seek God above all others

Application Remember that absolute financial security is an illusion – Work on laying up heavenly treasures by living according to heaven’s standards while you are still here on earth – Invest your treasures in God’s Kingdom – Single hearted devotion to God will provide a clear vision of God’s reality – Total commitment to God is incompatible with selfish, materialistic living
